Turn off your wireless mouse and keyboard manually to improve battery life
There?s a little on/off switch on the bottom of your wireless mouse that you can use to manually turn off the mice when its not in use.?This may slightly extend the battery life of your mouse in case you aren?t having one of the newer mice models that automatically switch off when left idle for a long period.
The problem is how do you remember that you have to turn off the wireless mouse (and the keyboard) when you are done for the day?
One option would be that you you use the built-in Windows Task Scheduler or the Group Policy Editor to display a reminder message on the screen every time you log off or shut down the computer. This is both geeky and requires too many steps.
Then there?s a simpler option as well. You can change the default ?System Shutdown? and ?System Logoff? sounds to a voice message that reminds you to turn off the mice before you are leave the computer. Here?s a sample sound (.wav file) created with Listen.
Open the Control Panel in Windows and search for Change System Sounds. Choose the ?Exit Windows? event and browse for your .wav file to set it as the default sound for the event. Do the same for ?Windows Logoff? event and you?ll never forget to turn off your wireless mouse and keyboard again.
Speaking of battery life, here are some additional tips courtesy Logitech?that may further push the battery life of your wireless mouse.
Get a light-colored mouse pad. While your mice may work well on your black granite table or even transparent surfaces like glass, they are best avoided as?they cause the tracking sensor in the mouse to use more power.
Your wireless mouse ships with a nano receiver that is put into the USB port of your computer. Make sure the USB receiver and the mice are close to each other else use an?USB extension cable for the receiver.
For best results, replace both batteries at the same time and avoid mixing brands.?Logitech suggests using alkaline batteries as non-alkaline batteries, such as NiMH or NiCd, operate at a lower voltage and may negatively impact the battery life of your mouse.
Turn off the mouse manually when you are travelling. While the mice may go to sleep /standby mode when not being used, they?ll wake up when they move around inside your bag and this consumes battery power.
When Jets coach Rex Ryan told Joe McKnight that he?s been traded from the offense to the defense, McKnight took that as an indication that he?s not good enough as a running back.
Ryan says that was the wrong message for McKnight to get. Instead, Ryan thinks McKnight should take it as a compliment that the coaches think he has the talent to move to cornerback, even though he hasn?t played there since high school.
?I think Joe misunderstood,? Ryan told reporters today. ?We?re trying to teach Joe our defense. The coverages and things like that. He still has a role on offense. It?s not that he?s being forgotten as a running back, that?s not the case. I want him to learn the coverages and things like that on defense. The way the league is now, you almost can?t have enough corners. They?re going three, four, five, receivers or something, so you have to be able to match up. The one thing I know from a physical standpoint, [is] that Joe can, from a talent and a physical standpoint, he can match up. He can run. He?s got size. He?s got some natural instincts, and that?s what we?ve seen. When we used to put him on scout team, that?s what we saw. Yesterday, he actually picked off all three quarterbacks. That?s a good thing and a bad thing.?
Ryan heard that McKnight took it as a criticism of his ability as a running back, and that he thinks he didn?t communicate well enough to McKnight.
?That was certainly not the message that I wanted to send to him, so I wasn?t clear on that,? Ryan said. ?He?s got talent as a running back. The one thing I know about Joe is when given an opportunity, as a kick returner, he led the NFL as a kick returner, so I think that?s pretty impressive. He was the number one kid in the country coming out of high school. His talent is pretty special. I had a coach from USC tell me that the day he walked on campus he was their best corner. They wanted to play him at running back, but that?ll give you an indication of the kind of talent that Joe has.?
Ultimately, a player?s job is to play whatever position his coach tells him to play, and if Ryan thinks McKnight can help the Jets more as a cornerback than as a running back, then McKnight is a cornerback. McKnight shouldn?t have a problem with that.
EUGENE, Ore. - With one look at a bike rack at the University of Oregon it becomes apparent that a large number of people choose to pedal for the commute.
However getting the attention of some campus-bound cyclists isn?t as easy: many UO students wear headphones while their riding their bicycles.
Kelly McIver, public information officer for the UO Police Department, said using headphones while you ride a bicycle is a distraction.
?It?s just another thing impeding your senses, that keeps you from being as aware as possible from everything going on around you,? he said.
McIver said there are several accidents on campus each year involving bicyclists who violate traffic laws. ?There?s a lot of demand for parking, there?s a lot of cycling activity, and there?s a lot of pedestrian activity. All those things converge and it?s a safety issue,? he said.
KVAL News flagged down a couple of student bicyclists wearing headphones to see what they thought about it.
?A lot of times I ride with one headphone in, and a lot of times I do it because I?m talking on the phone with someone,? Xander Berenstein said. He said a lot of bicyclists get into accidents without using headphones, so he doesn?t think wearing them makes a big difference.
Jack Yates said there?s an intersection on campus where ?lots of people wear small headphones. They?ve got them in both ears and they?re not paying attention and there?s lots of crashes down there.?
Yates knows about distracted bicycling first hand. He walked into an intersection and was hit by a distracted biker when he was in middle school. His hand was run over by a tire, but he was not seriously injured. He said he wasn?t paying attention.
Kasy Wilson was sideswiped by a bicyclist in the rain. She wasn?t wearing headphones at the time, but she couldn?t hear the bicycle approaching over the sound of the rain.
?I think our generation, especially, is really used to multitasking. And so I bet a lot of bicyclists don?t think it?s a big deal.? Wilson said.
It?s a familiar process to most air travelers by now: Watch the clock before your trip and log on to a computer within 24 hours of your flight to check in online. But even that simple routine, which has been a huge improvement over the previous tradition of standing in a long queue at the airport, might go away in the future ? something industry watchers say isn?t necessarily a plus.
GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. ? More than 70 of the 100 or more animals seized in Person County on Tuesday have been transported to Greensboro to receive medical treatment for starvation, abuse and neglect.
Officers say nearly 100 animals including, dogs, cats, horses, birds and a donkey were found living in deplorable conditions after Person County deputies served a search and seizure warrant on the property.
Area organizations helped local animal control and rescued 39 horses and nearly 70 small-breed dogs, cats and birds kept at the property
?It was one of the saddest places I?ve been,? explained Marsha Williams, with the Guilford County Animal Shelter.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
The Guilford County Animal Shelter first heard about the situation last week.? A couple of workers went to Person County to help out and bring a few animals back, but once they arrived they realized the situation was bigger and worse than they thought.
?We had to think quick on our feet and figure out how we were going to make this happen,? explained Williams.
The horses were described as very thin. Some are suffering from medical issues that require immediate attention. Ten of them were brought to Guilford County.
The dogs and cats were kept in unsanitary housing and many are afflicted with eye infections, skin infections and other signs of severe neglect.
50 dogs and cats and about 25 birds will stay overnight in the trauma center to get food, water and rest. On Wednesday, the dogs and cats that need treatment will be seen by veterinarians for skin, dental and eye problems.
The challenge: Secure bi-directional video stream across the Internet
The details: Securely send a video stream from VLC player on client A computer from behind one firewall, connect to a Linux server on the Internet and allow Client B to connect with their VLC player securely to the same Linux server and see the video streamed from the first client, and return their own video stream.
The server can act as a "meet me" room where video is copied across (routed?) and ports mapped to each other. Currently SIP is used to setup communication information and is the preferred signaling component for setup/teardown but we are open to suggesteions. Prefer an open source application(s) tailored to meet our needs. If the solution is to be custom built all rights and code will be released to buyer.
The limitations: No changes can be made in the firewall(s). Secure connection CANNOT require an installed VPN interface. Soft VPN is acceptable (SSL, SSH, RTMP, SRTP, etc.) as long as nothing has to be installed on the client like a layer 3 IPSEC VPN or TUN interface. If there is a client dependency it must be very small.
Video has to stream with no more than 2 seconds delay, must be usable and synchronous.
Server is Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and can support any packages required (NETCAT, SOCAT etc.).
How it will be used: Secure video conferencing from a web browser.
Cutting-edge technology makes NASA's hurricane mission a realityPublic release date: 25-Sep-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Cutting-edge NASA technology has made this year's NASA Hurricane mission a reality. NASA and other scientists are currently flying a suite of state-of-the-art, autonomously operated instruments that are gathering difficult-to-obtain measurements of wind speeds, precipitation, and cloud structures in and around tropical storms.
"Making these measurements possible is the platform on which the instruments are flying," said Paul Newman, the deputy principal investigator of NASA's Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel (HS3), managed by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. HS3 will use NASA's unmanned Global Hawks, which are capable of flying at altitudes greater than 60,000 feet with flight durations of up to 28 hours capabilities that increase the amount of data scientists can collect. "It's a brand-new way to do science," Newman said.
The month-long HS3 mission, which began in early September, is actually a more robust follow-on to NASA's Genesis and Rapid Intensification Processes (GRIP) experiment that scientists executed in 2010. Often referred to as "GRIP on steroids," HS3 is currently deploying one instrument-laden Global Hawk from the NASA Wallops Flight Facility on Virginia's Eastern Shore to look at the environment of tropical storms. In 2013 and 2014, a second Global Hawk will be added that will focus on getting detailed measurements of the inner core of hurricanes.
Without this new aircraft, developed originally for the U.S. Air Force to gather intelligence and surveillance data, the team says the mission wouldn't be possible.
The Global Hawk's ability to fly for a much longer period of time than manned aircraft will allow it to obtain previously difficult-to-get data. Scientists hope to use that data to gain new insights into how tropical storms form, and more importantly, how they intensify into major Atlantic hurricanes information that forecasters need to make better storm predictions, save lives, and ultimately prevent costly coastal evacuations if a storm doesn't warrant them.
"Because you can get to Africa from Wallops, we'll be able to study developing systems way out into the Atlantic," Newman explained. "Normal planes, which can fly for no more than about 10 hours, often miss the points where storms intensify," added Gerry Heymsfield, a Goddard scientist who used NASA Research and Development funding to create one of the mission's six instruments, the High-altitude Imaging Wind and Rain Airborne Profiler (HIWRAP). "With the Global Hawks, we have a much higher chance of capturing these events. Furthermore, we can sit on targets for a long time."
Just as important as the aircraft are the new or enhanced instruments designed to gather critical wind, temperature, humidity, and aerosol measurements in the environment surrounding the storm and the rain and wind patterns occurring inside their inner cores, they added. "The instruments bring it all together," Newman said. "We didn't have these instruments 10 years ago."
The Global Hawk currently on deployment at Wallops is known as the "environmental" aircraft because it samples the environment in which hurricanes are embedded. It carries three instruments.
A Goddard-provided laser system called the Cloud Physics Lidar (CPL) is located in the nose. CPL measures cloud structures and aerosols, such as dust, sea salt particles, and smoke particles, by bouncing laser light off these elements. An infrared instrument called the Scanning High-resolution Interferometer Sounder (S-HIS), provided by the University of Wisconsin in Madison, sits in the belly of the aircraft. It measures the vertical profile of temperature and water vapor.
At the tail end is a dropsonde system provided by the National Center for Atmospheric Research and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. This system consists of 88 paper-towel-roll-sized tubes that are ejected much like a soda can in a vending machine. As the sensor drops, a parachute slows its descent, allowing the sensor to drift down through the storm while measuring winds, temperature, pressure, and humidity.
In 2013 and 2014, working in tandem with its environmental counterpart, will be a second Global Hawk, known as the "over-storm" aircraft. It will sample the internal structure of hurricanes. It, too, will carry three instruments.
Heymsfield's HIWRAP, for example, will be situated in the belly of the Global Hawk and will be responsible for sampling the cores of hurricanes. Similar to a ground radar system, but pointed downward, HIWRAP measures rain structure and winds, providing a three-dimensional view of these conditions.
Also onboard this craft will be a microwave system called the High-Altitude MMIC Sounding Radiometer (HAMSR), created by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. Located in the aircraft's nose, this instrument uses microwave wavelengths to measure temperature, water vapor, and precipitation from the top of the storm to the surface.
At the other end of the aircraft in the tail section will be the Hurricane Imaging Radiometer (HIRAD) provided by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. This microwave instrument measures surface wind speeds and rain rates in an unusual way. It collects this data by measuring the amount of "foaminess" in ocean waters. According to Newman, the amount of foaminess is proportional to wind speeds at the surface.
Although all six instruments measure different conditions, they share one important characteristic: all operate autonomously and deliver data to scientists in real-time another scientific advance. In the past, aircraft instruments, which often required the presence of a scientist to operate them, would record captured data. Only after the aircraft landed could scientists begin evaluating what they had collected.
With the Global Hawk, however, the data are transmitted to the ground in real-time. Should conditions warrant, the science team can direct the pilot, who flies the aircraft from a computer console on the ground, to change course or tweak the pre-programmed flight path in some way to maximize or improve the data they are gathering. "With the Global Hawk and these instruments, we can make better decisions," Heymsfield added.
The five-year mission will continue through 2014, at which time the team hopes to have dramatically improved their understanding of how storms intensify. "The insights we get will benefit forecasters," Newman said. "What we hope to do is take this technique and make it part of the operational forecast infrastructure."
The HS3 mission is supported by several NASA facilities including Wallops, Goddard, NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif.; Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Ala.; and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. In addition, the mission also involves collaborations with various partners from government agencies and academia.
HS3 is an Earth Venture mission funded by NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Earth Venture missions are managed by NASA's Earth System Science Pathfinder Program at NASA's Langley Research Center, Hampton, Va. The HS3 Project itself is managed by the Earth Science Project Office at NASA's Ames Research Center.

Sotheby's opted for the creation of a joint venture in its years-long bid to overcome the legal hurdle.
"China and its growing class of collectors has been the single most attractive growth market for the company, and collectors from this region have become a significant force in our salerooms worldwide," said Sotheby's Asia chief executive Kevin Ching.
The auction house said it would be the controlling share holder in the business.
For centuries the worldwide art market was dominated by a few European auction houses, but a revolution has seen five Chinese houses enter the top ten by revenue, according to a recent report by information specialist Artprice.
A new generation of collectors in Beijing and Shanghai has pushed China to the forefront.
And Chinese artists Zhang Daqian (1899-1983) and Qi Baishi (1864-1957) now hold the top two places in Artprice's global ranking of artists by auction revenue, ahead of Andy Warhol (1928-1987) and Pablo Picasso (1881-1973).

We mentioned earlier in the week this was a big weekend for the Jones family, as?Jon defends his UFC light heavyweight belt tonight, while Chandler and Arthur face off in tomorrow night?s Patriots-Ravens game.
But the struggles they?ve faced throughout life, and continue to, makes their story about more than an athletic coincidence.
?All of this hasn?t dawned on me yet,? Jon Jones told Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com about his family?s success. ?We?re all still at the very young stages of our careers. I have this thing where I?m really big against complacency, so I don?t want accept the attitude like, ?We did it!? because we haven?t done it yet. Things could go wrong. You?re on top of the world one year and the next you?re borrowing money.
?I think there?s much more to come, but I am really happy for my parents. They can look at this being a success story at this point.?
Arthur II and Camille Jones? boys have made names for themselves, after struggling through tragedies in their younger years, and fighting to make things easier for their parents.
Their oldest sister Carmen died of brain cancer at age 18, and all helped with her care during her struggle.
Now, they?re paying back their mother for the years she looked after them.
Camille Jones has lost almost all her sight because of complications of diabetes. She?s also on dialysis and awaits a kidney transplant.
Chandler?s paying for her medical insurance, while Jon?s hired a nurse and a chef to help their parents, who moved them out of a rough neighborhood to the small town of Endicott, N.Y. as children. ?I remember my dad telling our family we were going so we could have a better life,? Jon said.
Their parents will be in Toronto for Jon?s fight tonight, then head to Baltimore to see the other two. And for all they?ve been through, they try to keep things in perspective.
?Life hasn?t changed that much,? Arthur Jones II said. ?People at the church are very happy for me, but there?s no big brouhaha of, ?That?s Mr. Jones. He?s a famous dad.?
With Jon one of the top fighters in the world, and Chandler emerging as a contributor for the Patriots as a first-round pick, that could be changing, soon.
But as impressive is the way the family has banded together for each other.
BENGHAZI, Libya (AP) ? Upheaval in Libya's second largest city raises a collision between Libyans' aspirations for change and the capability of the country's fragile, post-Moammar Gadhafi leadership to bring it. After protests against militias rock Benghazi, leaving at least four dead, residents on Saturday vowed a new "revolution" to rid themselves of armed factions and Islamic extremists.
But authorities tried to stem the popular anger, pleading that with the police and army weak, they need some of those militias to keep security.
Furious assaults by protesters against the compounds of several armed groups in Benghazi in the early hours Saturday were an unprecedented eruption of public frustration. Thousands stormed the headquarters of Ansar al-Shariah, an Islamic extremist group suspected in the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate here. They drove out the Ansar gunmen and set fire to cars in the compound, once a major base for Gadhafi's feared security forces.
The protesters then moved onto the base of a second Islamist militia, the Rafallah Sahati Brigade. Brigade fighters opened fire in rioting with the protesters. The state news agency Saturday said four protesters were killed and 70 injured during the night's turmoil.
On Saturday, the city of 1 million in eastern Libya was brimming with anger, rumors and conspiracy theories.
Some militiamen bitterly accused Gadhafi loyalists of fueling the protests. Further adding to the tensions, the bodies of six soldiers were found in the morning dumped on the outskirts of the city, shot through the forehead and their hands cuffed, state TV reported. An army colonel was reported missing, feared kidnapped. Some media reports accused militiamen taking revenge on Gadhafi-era veterans in the military; in contrast, a military spokesman, Ali al-Shakhli, blamed Gadhafi loyalists, saying they were trying to stir up trouble between the public and militias.
Since Gadhafi's ouster and death around a year ago, a series of interim leaders have struggled to bring order to a country that was eviscerated under his 42-year regime, with security forces and the military intentionally kept weak and government institutions hollowed of authority.
The militias, which arose as people took up arms to fight Gadhafi during last year's eight-month civil war, have typified the problem. They bristle with heavy weapons, pay little attention to national authorities and are accused by some of acting like gangs, carrying out killings. Islamist militias often push their demands for enforcement of strict Shariah law.
Yet, authorities need them. The Rafallah Sahati Brigade kept security in Benghazi during national elections this year and guards a large collection of seized weapons at its compound, which was once a Gadhafi residence. Ansar al-Shariah protects Benghazi's main Jalaa Hospital, putting a stop to frequent attacks against it by gunmen.
On Saturday, armed Rafallah Shahati militiamen ? weary from the clashes the night before ? guarded the entrance to their compound, standing next to charred cars. The fighters, some in military uniforms, others dressed in Afghan Mujahedeen-style outfits, were indignant.
"Those you call protesters are looters and thieves," said Nour Eddin al-Haddad, a young man with an automatic rifle slung on his back. "We fought for the revolution. We are the real revolutionaries."
Activists and protesters, however, say it is time the militias disband and the army and security forces take control. Benghazi lawyer Ibrahim al-Aribi said that if the government doesn't act, "there will be a second revolution and the spark will be Benghazi."
"We want stability and rule of law so we can start building the state, but the Tripoli government appears to have not yet quiet understood people's demands," he said.
Farag Akwash, a 22-year-old protester wounded in the arm during the night's clashes, insisted, "We don't want to see militias in the city anymore. We only want to see army and police."
The Sept. 11 attack against the U.S. Consulate that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans galvanized public anger against the militias. Some 30,000 people marched through Benghazi on Friday to the gates of the Ansar al-Shariah compound, demanding the groups disband. The storming of the compound came hours later after the march ended. Protesters also stormed into the Jalaa Hospital, driving out Ansar fighters there.
The unrest comes at a time when the power vacuum in Libya continues. The first post-Gadhafi national elections in May chose a national assembly that is serving as a parliament and that chose the new president, Mohammed el-Megaref, and a prime minister, Mustafa Abushagur. But Abushagur, believed to have struck an alliance with the Muslim Brotherhood, has yet to form a cabinet. Members of the assembly are pressing him to replace the interior and defense ministers in charge of security forces and the military in part because of their failures to bring control.
Authrorities were left trying to keep protesters away from what they called "legitimate" militias ? ones that they rely on for security like Rafallah Shahati, which is headed by an Islamist, Ismail al-Salabi, who was reportedly injured in the clashes.
El-Megaref called on protesters to leave alone militias that are "under state legitimacy, and go home."
Omar Humidan, assembly spokesman, acknowledged that militias "have wrong practices ... serve their own agenda and have their own ideology." But he warned that "striking these militias and demanding they disband immediately will have grave consequences."
"These are the ones that preserve security," he said. "The state has a weak army and no way it can fill any vacuum resulting in eviction of these militias. ... The street is upset because of the militias and their infighting. We are worried of the fallout in the absence of those militias. The state must be given the time."
Aside from Rafallah Sahati, there are two other major militias in Benghazi that authorities rely on. One is called Libya Shield, led by Wassam Bin Hamaad, another Islamist and who has interfered several times in separating rival tribes. Another is the Feb. 17 Brigade, led by Fawzi Abu Kataf who is seen as connected to the Muslim Brotherhood. The militia is believed to be the closest to the state authorities and has helped secure borders.
Fathi Fadhali, a prominent Islamist thinker in Benghazi, said the description of some militias as "legitimate" just contradicts common sense.
"How can you be a militia and legitimate at the same time?" he said. "How do you leave a group of extremists taking charge of security? Yes, you can accept their help for the short term but not long-term.
"The state must interfere as soon as possible ? even, excuse me to say it, by using force ? before everything collapses., I am extremely worried."
