Texas home built from salvaged cattle bones & other trash

Dan Phillips believes in building homes with recycled and local materials, but he goes far beyond scrap wood. He?s used bottle tops and corks for floors, broken mirrors and dvds for wall-covering and license plates and gas station signs for roofing. His homes often reach 80% recycled elements, but arguably his most unique material is cattle bones.

In one of his homes in Eastern Texas, he- and his team from The Phoenix Commotion- have used bones for countertops, floor tiles, door handles and even patio furniture. The Bone House is a one-of-a-kind place, but Phillips doesn?t see it as odd to use animal parts in building. ?Back when I was restoring art and antiques, finding ivory was very difficult because it's illegal and the only difference between bone and ivory is that bone is free and not illegal.?

Given his location in Huntsville, Texas (70 miles north of Houston), cattle bones are also a very local resource. ?Every rancher in Texas has a bone yard. I'll say, 'Can I raid your bone yard' and they'll say, 'Help yourself'?.

Phillips began his company 15 years ago with the goal of building low-income housing out of trash. He and his team of apprentices have now built 14 homes- including a ?Budweiser house? and a treehouse. Phillips tries to provide affordable housing for low-income folks, single mothers and artists (for more, see the soon-to-be-released book Resurrecting Trash: Dan Phillips and the Phoenix Commotion).

One of his apprentices, Elizabeth ?Neko? Richardson- who is a first-time builder currently constructing her own home - filmed for us this tour of the Bone House and interview with Dan Phillips.

Pet Boarding and The Country Store | Golden Acres Ranch

Changes and more??.

What a surprise, we?re making some changes and additions.

I'm YodaWe?ve been pet boarding for several years and love it. It all started with the suggestion from a good friend. It has been happening for nine years now. We decided we need to be a little more sophisticated (like the dogs care) and have retrofitted a space for indoor/outdoor kennels. We have nice size play-yards with shelter and shade already. The dogs really get to enjoy that farm experience. They can see the goats, sheep, chickens and us throughout the day. Then we walked them to a separate building to bed down for the night in comfort. We also moved the dogs inside when it was too hot, cold or stormy. Now they have a spot close by with all the amenities a dog desires. They can come in and out at will with their automatic watering bowls and a comfy bed.

Goldfish, parakeets, and the pet mouse. We?ll take cats and other little critters too. Cats don?t like the barking dogs so there is? separate space for them. Bring the cage and food for the pet mouse or parakeet and we?ll keep them safe and happy for you. You can click here to find out about costs and shot requirements.

The Country Store

With these changes to the pet boarding area, I now have room to develop a specialty County Store. We been licensed to use a space in a separate building we all call ?The Bunkhouse? which will now be renamed. That?s were we?be been selling the lamb and goat cuts, when we have them, and our Jelly Logo Labeljellies and jams. Now we?re are going to use the whole building. We will have lots of country type decor and fun items to browse. Handmade things and little goodies to eat.? We planning some workshops and demonstration that include wool washing and carding, jelly making, wood carving and how to make a fabric wreath or Raggedy Ann doll. This will be a place where you can bring the family and let them play safely while you enjoy an activity yourself.

We hope to be up and running in March with our first ?Breakfast at the Farm? or some such thing. Expect further announcements as soon as the details are worked out.

(AP) ? Penny-pinching by a band known for its onstage pyrotechnic displays may have cost more than 230 people their lives at a nightclub in southern Brazil, according to a police inspector leading the investigation into this weekend's deadly blaze.

Inspector Marcelo Arigony told reporters at a news conference Tuesday that members of the band knowingly purchased flares meant for outdoor use because they cost a mere $1.25 a piece, compared with the $35 price tag for an indoor flare.

"The flare lit was for outdoor use only, and the people who lit them know that," said Arigony, adding that members of the group acknowledged regularly opting for the less expensive flares. "They chose to buy those because they were cheaper than those that can be used indoors."

Arigony, whose cousin died in the fire, added: "The pyrotechnics were part of their show ? the guys even wore gloves onstage so they wouldn't burn their hands."

The repercussions of the band's choice to use flares continued to send shock waves through Santa Maria, a college town of 260,000 people that's been stunned by the early Sunday morning tragedy in the Kiss nightclub.

The Rio Grande do Sul state forensics department raised the death toll Tuesday from 231 to 234 to account for three victims who did not appear on the original list of the dead. Authorities say more than 120 people remain hospitalized for smoke inhalation and burns, with dozens of them in critical condition.

The blaze began at around 2:30 am local time, during a performance by Gurizada Fandangueira, a country music band that had made the use of pyrotechnics a trademark of their shows. The band's guitarist told media that the 615 square-meter (6,650-square-foot) club was packed with an estimated 1,200 to 1,300 people. The police have said the capacity for a club of that size is under 700 people.

Police said the club's ceiling was covered with insulating foam made from a combustible material that appeared to have ignited after it came in contact with a spark from a flare lit during the performance.

After the fire extinguisher malfunctioned, the blaze spread throughout the packed club at lightning speed, emitting a thick, toxic smoke. Because Kiss apparently had neither an alarm nor a sprinkler system and only one working exit, the crowd was left to search desperately for a way out.

About 50 of the victims were found in the club's two bathrooms, where the blinding smoke caused them to believe the doors were exits.

Police investigator Arigony said people headed to the bathrooms because the only lights in the dark club were coming from there, and the patrons mistook them for exits. The foam, which emitted a toxic gas, was not proper soundproofing equipment and was likely only used to cut down on the echo inside the club, Arigony said.

He added that a full analysis of the foam was ongoing. The malfunctioning fire extinguisher was not legal, he said, and the club's operating license had expired in August.

"There were diverse irregularities," Arigony said. "Any child could have seen that this establishment should not have been open."

Outraged locals, mostly young people like those who died in the blaze, marched through Santa Maria Tuesday to demand justice for the dead, an unusual move in a country where public protests are rare. The demonstration interrupted the police news conference, even as Arigony pledged to investigate everyone involved in the tragedy ? including the authorities charged with making sure such establishments are up to code, such as firefighters and city officials.

"There could have been an administrative failure in the mayor's office or with the firefighters," he said. "We have no proof, but we will investigate, we will look into everything."

No charges have been filed. Under Brazilian law, prosecutors can only file charges after police complete their investigation, which in this case could take 30 days. Prosecutors have said manslaughter charges could be filed.

The fire inspired nationwide action, and several mayors said they would crack down on nightclubs and other venues in their cities.

The government of the country's biggest city, Sao Paulo, promised tougher security regulations for nightclubs and other places where many people gather. The mayor of the city of Americana, Sao Paulo state, ordered the temporary shutdown of 10 of the city's nightclubs. Mayor Diego de Nadai suspended the operating permits of the nightclubs pending inspections into the fire and accident prevention measures in place, local media reported.

The Folha de S. Paulo newspaper reported that in Manaus, nightclubs with empty fire extinguishers and unmarked emergency exits have been shut down and fined. And in Rio de Janeiro, a consumer complaint hotline has received more than 60 calls since Sunday's tragedy denouncing hazardous conditions at night spots, theaters, supermarkets, schools, hospitals and shopping malls around the state. Blocked emergency exits and nonexistent fire alarms and extinguishers top the list of most common complaints.

Brazil's O Globo newspaper reported on its website that the mayor's office in Santa Maria ordered all nightclubs closed for 30 days while inspections are carried out. In Brasilia, the nation's capital, lawmakers in the lower house worked on a proposal that would require federal safety minimum standards across Brazil ? now, states individually create such laws.

Investigator Arigony said police searched two other Santa Maria nightspots owned by Mauro Hoffmann, one of the partners of the Kiss nightclub, for evidence that could help shed light on the investigation.

Police said earlier that computers that had stored footage from security cameras inside the club were missing ? but Arigony said police had found them at a computer repair shop, where they were dropped off a week ago, meaning images from the disaster would not be on them. Owners of the club told police the security cameras hadn't worked in months.

Both owners of the club were provisionally detained, along with two of the band members. A judge froze the assets of the club's owners, pending the investigation.

The fire appeared to mark a possible turning point for a country that has long turned a blind eye to safety and infrastructure concerns. The disaster, the worst fire of its kind in more than a decade, has also raised questions of whether Brazilian authorities are up to the task of ensuring safety in such venues as the country prepares to host next year's World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.

O Globo published an editorial Tuesday saying it was time for action.

"The tragedy in Santa Maria forces us to seriously reflect over our national culture of leniency, contempt and corruption," it said. "We must start from the principle that the mea culpa belongs to us all: public servants, owners of establishments that disregard safety regulations, and regular citizens who flout them."

Soccer legend Pele, too, urged the Brazilian government to "make safety and security a priority in this country."

"So many young people are no longer with us, they had entire lives ahead of them. I ask God to protect them and take care of their families," he wrote on Twitter.

According to state safety codes here, clubs should have one fire extinguisher every 1,500 square feet as well as multiple emergency exits. Limits on the number of people admitted are to be strictly respected. None of that appears to have happened at the Santa Maria nightclub.

Rodrigo Martins, a guitarist for the group playing that night, told Globo TV network in an interview Monday that the flames broke out minutes after the employment of a pyrotechnic machine that fans out colored sparks.

"I thought I was going to die there," Martins said. "There was nothing I could do, with the fire spreading and people screaming in front."

Most of the dead were college students 18 to 21 years old, but they also included some minors. Almost all died from smoke inhalation rather than burns.

The blaze was the deadliest in Brazil since at least 1961, when a fire that swept through a circus killed 503 people in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro.

Sunday's fire also appeared to be the worst at a nightclub anywhere in the world since December 2000, when a welding accident reportedly set off a fire at a club in Luoyang, China, killing 309 people.

Editor's desk: Macworld|iWorld 2013 bound!

Early tomorrow morning I'm jumping in a plane and flying to San Francisco, California for Macworld|iWorld 2013. Since it's been well below -20 celsius in Montreal this week, I'm looking even more forward to it than usual.

Leanna Lofte, who usually covers the SF events with me, just gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Lucy Danae Lofte, so she's sitting this one out. There are very few people in our line of work with her camera skills, so to make sure we keep the level of quality you guys expect and deserve, we're bringing Martin Reisch with us this year. Yeah.

There'll be a lot going on, and we'll be doing our best to bring you with us every step of the way with photo journals, videos, podcasts, and a bunch of social sharing. Here's the plan so far:

There will be tons of other stuff happening in and around all that, so make sure you keep your browsers locked to iMore's Macworld|iWorld page, and subscribe to the iMore YouTube channel to get all the latest videos as soon as inhumanly possible.

And for up-to-the-minute stuff, including everything and anything unfit for print, you can follow @reneritchie and @safesolvent on Twitter.

Last year Macworld|iWorld completed their transition from trade show to epicenter of the community, from a place to see Apple stuff to place to meet and enjoy the company of fellow Apple enthusiasts. I can't wait to see what they have in store for all of us this year.

Let me know what you'd like to see from our Macworld|iWorld coverage, and if you're going to be there are well, please do come up and say hello!

Scuffles outside PM's office after steel layoffs

(AP) ? Some 250 steel workers from Liege's ArcelorMittal plant have scuffled with police outside the prime minister's office, a day after the leading steel and mining company announced it would close seven facilities in eastern Belgium.

The workers pitched stones at police, who retaliated by using the water cannon in freezing temperatures.

Inside, Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo was assessing if anything could be done to save the 1,300 jobs at stake. ArcelorMittal blamed slumping demand for steel and structural overcapacity in Europe for its decision to close the plants.

The company said it would continue to operate five steel production lines, which employ 800 people.

New year brings renewed activity in commercial real estate | The ...

Article date: Jan 23 2013

Dale Beede

Quick question: What?s the single denominator that causes real estate sales and leasing to slow? Answer: Indecision.

Thank goodness the election is over, politicians insist we?re not falling off a fiscal cliff and we?ve entered a new year full of promise.? And thank goodness the indecision is over.?

Commercial real estate users and investors have realized that in spite of the games played in Washington, D.C., now is probably a good time to make the move to a new location or improve their properties for themselves or their tenants. The new year is upon us, and it?s a new year indeed.

Grand Junction has swarmed with contractors and developers this past month who are here to bid on the proposed new headquarters for the local office of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. It seems the current space for the BLM office isn?t sufficient. At least 30 to 40 potential bidders have been in Grand Junction to turn over every improved property and vacant parcel to find just the right location for their proposals. It doesn?t matter the same event occurred a few years ago and no BLM move was made. Hopefully, this time the Grand Valley will be rewarded with the property sales and new construction jobs that come with a planned move of this size.

January also marks the month many New Year?s resolutions are implemented. We see sellers with a renewed focus on making properties more attractive for buyers and tenants. We also see renewed activity in office leasing.?

Companies are still expanding or contracting, so movement is the leasing market continues to occur. While stable, the energy sector is still licking its wounds from a glut of available natural gas and the low prices that continue to slow the market. We don?t expect a lot of movement among players in the natural gas market this year in terms of real estate sales and leases ? except that a greater number of mergers and acquisitions are expected. Time will tell if our local market will see a pickup or not.

What continues to be hot? Retail. Welcome to the new Sprouts in the Rimrock Marketplace, TJ Maxx at Grand Mesa Center and Tractor Supply across from Mesa Mall. That?s not to mention some proposed new casual food outlets expected to expand into the Grand Junction market over the next year. These investments in Grand Junction have helped to build construction and service-sector jobs. And jobs is what our economy is all about.

So, what are we missing? A Denver distribution company visited the Grand Valley twice in recent weeks looking for a 20,000-square-foot, dock-high building for long-term lease. Not a single building was found that met their needs. Chances are, a group of farsighted investors will be found to remedy this situation or we?ll continue to send these companies elsewhere.

Hopefully, 2013 will be the year our economy rebounds significantly and common-sense leadership once again becomes the norm. Here?s to your success this year.

Overland Travel - Car Insurance Canada and USA -

It starts to feel as if getting insurance for Panda has become a nightmare that is haunting us. How can it be so difficult to get insurance for a vehicle? It has already been a huge hassle to find a company in Holland that would insure us for Europe, but that was nothing compared to the difficulties of getting insurance in Canada. Over the past couple of months I have contacted at least a dozen different companies and harassed a few fellow travelers to find out how they did it, but I am still at point zero.

As departure time is getting closer, this is starting to make us a little nervous. Even though I am still convinced it should be possible to obtain insurance once we are in Canada, we would be a lot more relaxed if it would be arranged in advance. We do not want to stand there in Halifax port, looking at the car but not being able to drive it anywhere..

By now I have contacted the following companies that are based in Canada:

Statefarm ? said they only insure Canadians
Allstate ? said they do not have temporary insurances
Kanetix ? do not insure cars older than 1997
Thum Insurance ? do not insure cars older than 19 years
Motorcycle Express (via the HUBB) ? only insure motorcycles
AIG Property ? need a US address + minimum a year

After having contacted those, I found some insurance companies that claim to insure overlanders for the whole world:

Tourinsure.de ? only when arriving in a US port
Karl Nowag ? only when arriving in a US port
Alessie Rotterdam ? only when arriving in a US port
Seabridge ? no cars older than 19 years

It seems that there is some tricky law that prevents international insurance companies to insure vehicles arriving in Canada. I do not really care if in Canada only Canadian companies are allowed to offer insurance, but we have not had any luck with the Canadian companies either.

I have now contacted the Canadian Insurance Bureau, hoping they can explain to us how to get this done.

But at the same time I want to ask you, fellow overlanders in the Americas, what did you do? Any advice on how to proceed? Should we try to reroute and start in the US instead of Canada? Should we contact the Canadian automobile club once in Canada? Try to get insurance in Halifax port?
Thank you so much for any help you can give us..

Triple suicide bomb attack targets Afghan government building

KABUL (Reuters) - A coordinated attack involving at least three suicide bombers and a powerful car bomb took aim at the headquarters of the Kabul traffic department on Monday, followed by a clash between at least one insurgent and security forces, police said.

The attack took place just days after six suicide bombers attacked the Afghan spy agency in Kabul, killing two.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for Monday's attack.

"Today at 5 o'clock in the morning (8:30 p.m. EST Sunday) a number of mujahideen martyrs entered a government building close to an American training centre... Heavy fighting is ongoing," spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a text message to media.

Police said it was not immediately clear if there were any casualties in the attack, which involved a second bombing, a tactic favored by Islamist insurgents elsewhere but relatively rare in Afghanistan.

"About an hour after the initial attack (triple suicide bomb attack) a fourth man drove a car to the same compound and detonated another bomb," the head of the Kabul police criminal investigation department, Mohammad Zahir, told Reuters.

Violence across the country has been increasing over the last year, sparking concern over how the 350,000-strong Afghan security forces will be able to manage once foreign troops withdraw by 2014.

What You Need to Know About Today's Home Buyers | Zillow Blog

Many parts of the country are seeing an uptick in real estate activity. We?ve been hearing for months now that buyers have returned; that it has become cheaper to own than to rent in many markets; and that sellers are realizing their once unsaleable homes may have a market.

If you?re a seller, it?s helpful to understand the mindset of today?s buyer, to understand what they?ve been through and what they?re willing to do ? or not do ? to get the home they want.

The ?Crash? Had a Big Impact on Today?s Home Buyers

Many home buyers on the open house circuit today may have been out there a few years back. They?re experienced buyers who were searching for a home before the credit crisis and market crash and quickly jumped ship, not wanting to make it into the history books as yet another homeowner whose property was under water. After the crash, prices seemed like such a good deal. But there was still the fear prices would fall further. Buyers couldn?t bear the thought of signing the papers, only to see the market go down another 10 percent. So they sat on the sidelines for years and are beginning to return now.

New-to-Market Buyers are Savvy

Of course, there are buyers entering the market now for the first time, too. They may be recently married, have a stable job or have committed to living in a certain area for the next five years. These folks have been casually observing real estate from the sidelines recently. They watch the local news, see real estate stories online, and probably have the perception that the market has been doom and gloom, though they feel it just may be the right time for them.

Their Confidence is Back

No matter where today?s home buyers come from, they have one thing in common. They all have a sense of confidence about the real estate market.? Maybe they?ve been renting the past five years and have come across online calculators or research that helped them realize rents have risen too much, that they can actually afford to buy and pay less per month. It?s possible they met with their CPA recently, who suggested they could benefit from the tax savings of owning real estate. It could have been that, at the Christmas table this year, they found out Grandma Lorraine left them a small amount of cash when she died last year.

They?re on a Mission

Whatever their background or recent experience, today?s home buyers are coming to the real estate market in a bit of a ?herd? mentality. They see reports of markets rising and interest rates still at 20-year-lows. They recognize rents are rising. These buyers, working with a local real estate agent, have already been pre-approved by their lender. They?re on a mission. They want to get into the market early. They don?t want to miss the boat.

They?ll Pay a Little More to Get in the Door

Today?s buyers are forgiving of small flaws in a property and aren?t afraid to pay a little more to get in the door. In essence, they?re the ideal buyers. Their attitudes, coupled with low interest rates and inventory, are the recipe for the beginning of a seller?s market.

Their Blinders are Off

But some things have changed. Unlike the buyers of 2004 or 2005, today?s buyers have lived through our countries? economic crisis and market meltdown.? They may be back and they may be serious about buying, but they aren?t going in with blinders anymore.

Advice to Sellers

Getting ready to sell your home and your agent tells you it?s a ?seller?s market?? Yes, its true the market is shifting back in favor of sellers. But it?s not as easy as throwing it on the market and waiting for offers to come, as it often was during the boom years.

Buyers, though ready and able, will demand a little more, may negotiate more, or may simply not want to feel they?re being taken for a ride. The littlest feeling of a not-so-good deal or something going sideways can still scare a buyer away. When this happens, you?re left with a property that goes ?back on market,? and that could leave a stain on the listing.

While things are in your favor, be open to a little negotiation and be ready to treat the buyer fairly and honestly. Don?t assume you have complete control of the negotiations or the sales process. Be mindful that, while you may not have been one of them, many sellers have been desperate to sell or get out of their current homes in the past. Many of them would be grateful just to have a buyer today?and they, for better or worse, may be your competition.

Google Retains #1 Rank In Fortune's Best Companies To Work For

Fortune Magazine released their annual best companies to work for list, and Google is number one on the list again, four years running.

Google took the number one spot because, as the magazine writes:

The Internet juggernaut takes the Best Companies crown for the fourth time, and not just for the 100,000 hours of free massages it doled out in 2012. New this year are three wellness centers and a seven-acre sports complex, which includes a roller hockey rink; courts for basketball, bocce, and shuffle ball; and horseshoe pits.

Facebook is not on the 100 list but Microsoft is and ranks number 75. Yahoo and IAC, parent company of Ask.com, are also nowhere to be found on the list.

22 Stairways That Lead Nowhere

There is something weird and mysterious about stairways that don't go anywhere, and yet they're surprisingly common: inside and outside old buildings, among demolished walls, in big cities and small villages, or in artists' imaginations. They get your mind going, spurring you to imagine secret places and invisible doors. Try climbing the next one you encounter. Or just imagine climbing these. More »

S.Africa's PMI contracts to 47.4 in December

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa's seasonally adjusted Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) contracted for the fourth consecutive month in December, a trend last seen during the 2008/09 recession, a survey showed on Wednesday.

Weak employment figures pushed the PMI 2.1 points lower to 47.4 in December, partly due to several wage strikes which beset the manufacturing, mining and farming sectors in the second half of 2012.

Manufacturing accounts for about 15 percent of South Africa's economy and is vital for creating employment in an economy where a quarter of the labour force is without work.

7 Things We Should Learn From Our Parents (or Not) About ...

When we talk about retirement, most of us are still thinking about our parents? retirement and how they did ? or did not ? plan properly for it.? It?s no big stretch to think that our retirement will differ significantly from that of our parents, but there are still lessons to be learned from them in preparing:

1.? Seek out a pension plan.? If you are considering a career change or job move, look for companies that offer traditional pension plans. Having a pension can make an incredible difference in retirement security. There are a few companies left who offer them. If you can get one, do!

2.? Think of Investing for a Retirement that can last 30-40 years. Look for non-traditional forms of investment that can provide cash flow to you later. Consider investing in successful local businesses; invest in yourself with more education or training or by opening a business of your own; invest in low risk loans or private mortgages; become a member of www.lendingclub.com where you can invest in private loans with much better returns than depository returns.

3.? If you don?t have a pension plan, compensate. Start investing in a retirement planning early and keep investing in it throughout your working life.

4.? Diversify. Do NOT put all your eggs in one basket, or one kind of basket. Many people only put their money in IRAs and 401(k)s, which creates overconfidence in what resources will be available. Overusing qualified funds also guarantees you?ll overlook other important investment opportunities because you?re locked into the investments the plan offers. Self-directed IRAs give you more control and are worth the time to find a good custodian and find a great investment.

5.? Participate. Don?t leave your planning to an advisor. There are great advisors out there, but your ability to retire is up to you and no one else. Know what you own. Know how you own it. Know the potential returns, cash flow possibilities, and tax implications of all your investments. Question everything. The folks who lost everything in the Bernie Madoff scam didn?t question anything. Take control and be the master of your money, not the other way around.

6.? Plan for health care expenses. It is estimated that most Americans will spend at least $240,000 on health care in retirement, and you will either need to save that amount or have a health coverage plan in place to cover your retirement medical costs. Invest in a Health Savings Account (HSA) to the maximum allowed, $3,250 for single person, $6,450 for a family in 2014. That untaxed amount rolls over if you don?t use it and can be invested for strong returns. The only qualifier is that it has to be used for healthcare not covered by your insurance. You know you?re going to need it, so get the tax break for it. It?s like a discount coupon on future healthcare, and you get to use it as an investment account so it can grow over time!

7.? Start early and stay the course. As soon as you start working, aim to save at least 10 percent of your income every year ? 15 percent is even better if doable.? And keep saving throughout your working years.? As your salary increases, try to set aside even more so the comfortable retirement you envision can become a reality. If it?s late in the game, just start where you are and don?t spend too much mental energy on what you don?t have. Focus on what you want and envision a retirement of joy and freedom. The start paving the way, one dollar, one investment at a time.

If you?d like to learn more about retirement planning strategies for your family, call our office today to schedule a time for us to sit down and talk. Demi Moore Mud Bath Photos Reveal Crazy Times In Mexico

Demi Moore was spotted in Mexico enjoying some vacation time with friends in the mud and a bath that?s supposed to help rejuvenate the skin, body, and mind. The actress has been spotted at a few public places and it?s apparent that she?s moving on with her life without Ashton Kutcher.

Demi Moore Mud Bath

Kutcher filed for divorce last month, which was when Moore went into hiding. As it turns out, it didn?t last long because she was spotted at a party and was enjoying herself. There are rumors that she has hooked up with another young man, younger than Kutcher.

Moore, 50, was photographed enjoying a mud bath, which is common for tourists who visit the resort in Tulum, Mexico.

?Demi Moore was snapped enjoying a mud spa treatment on her Christmas vacation at a resort in Tulum, Mexico. She indulged with a little dirt on the beach and relaxed in the warm sunshine,? insiders said.

?Of course, the 50-year-old star bared her muy caliente bikini bod for the beauty treatment, flaunting her slim and trim figure while getting down ?n dirty,? according to media outlet E! Online.

?Demi was joined by a group of girlfriends on the holiday vacay, and she stayed in Mexico for a week, enjoying the mud bath on New Year?s Eve,? E! says.

Friends and other insiders say Moore is ?in a really good place at the moment and is hopeful about the future.?

Moore is seeing someone but it?s ?nothing serious? for the time being, so she?s putting off public appearances for now.

Kutcher, who is dating Mila Kunis, was finally granted a divorce after Moore refused to sign the papers, prompting speculation that a court battle was near, but the two reached a financial agreement that would please them both.

Moore has been though a lot of turmoil with Kutcher and friends are upbeat that she is finally moving forward with her life.

From iPad to Nexus 7: The App Transition

Now that I?m settling in with my Nexus 7, after my hefty deliberations which resulted in my recent hocking of my once-beloved iPad 3, I am now focused more on the day-to-day tasks for which this tablet is used. Some apps I became accustomed to on iOS/iPad have versions for Android/Nexus, but there can still be huge differences between platforms. And sometimes, there is no direct analog for me, and I have to hunt for a replacement. I thought it might be useful to look at some of the ways in which I?ve not had to adjust my habits, the ways in which some ports from iOS to Android do and do not work, and some options that differ entirely from iPad life.

I definitely consider the Nexus 7 more of a casual consumption device than a work machine, and that?s exactly what I wanted when I got it (in some ways, the iPad felt like ?work? with it?s weight and bulk). So you?ll notice that a lot of this is about reading stuff, be it web content or books. If I wanted the Nexus to be more of a creative tool, well, I?d have bought the wrong toy ? the iPad is the far better choice for getting shit done. This is to say that the concentration here is primarily on the Nexus 7 as a way to read and interact rather than as a tool for creation or work.

I?ll start with apps that I used regularly on iOS/iPad (and probably still do since I continue to use an iPhone 5 as well) and have versions on Android.

Flipboard: Easily the most successful like-for-like situation I?m having with the iOS to Android tablet transition. The Android and iOS versions of Flipboard are nearly indistinguishable in the best sense. Functionality is identical, they look exactly the same, and are even comparable in terms of smoothness of performance. Flipboard is an inspired bit of software, bringing the benefits of both curation and standalone publications into a gorgeous and highly readable package. Having it work so well on Android, and on a comfortable 7? device no less, is great.

Instapaper: This is a very mixed situation. I absolutely prefer reading on the Nexus 7 over the 10? iPad, regardless of the app I?m using. The Android version of Instapaper suffices, but coming from the iOS version, it feels very antiquated, like it?s several versions old. It looks like the Instapaper you know from iPad, but it doesn?t feel like it.

Here?s an example: Only yesterday the Android version gained pagination (as opposed to only being able to scroll), which for me was huge. I find scrolling to be a pain in the ass, and far less of a clean experience than paging through an article, be those page-turns animated to look like a book or not (and I kind of like that, too, for reasons I guess I have to chalk up to the comfort of familiarity). So when it was added to the Android Instapaper I was thrilled, but then found that it was very slow; a tap or swipe to turn the page would mean a delay and then a half-assed fading of one page into the next. It was actually more of a pain to have pagination enabled than not.
Oh, and you have to enable it within each individual article. There?s no global setting.

So while I prefer Instapaper as a service, the problems with its Android app are making me look elsewhere. I am trying out a couple of Instapaper clients (Instafetch Pro is the best I?ve seen, but even that is a bit sloppy), and even looking at alternate services like Readability and Pocket. Alas, the Readability Android app likewise lacks some of the polish of its iOS kin, though Pocket actually looks quite good on Android, and it even does a decent job of pagination. So perhaps I?ll migrate.

Facebook: I?ve grown to hate Facebook, but because of the social ties it allows me to maintain, and because of the nature of my job, I feel kind of stuck using it on a regular basis. Fine. The iPad version?s recent retooling was pretty successful; while not as powerful as the desktop version of the site, the app was powerful and smooth.

The Android version ought to be. I mean, it is, when it works. But for some reason the app is constantly under the impression that I have no Internet connection, and craps out. I don?t know if this is a problem with the app, with the Nexus, or what, but it?s become a real headache, and I find myself using the website more often when on the Nexus just to make sure it?s going to actually work. When it does work, however, it?s almost exactly the same as the iOS app, save for some tiny UI elements that don?t much matter.

Twitter: I miss Tweetbot, but the official Twitter app is fine. It works well, it has all necessary functionality for basic use, and it even kind of works that the app is pretty clearly designed for a phone. The Nexus 7 screen is small and narrow enough that having a phone-type interface for Twitter is not jarring.

Now, I?d really like to find a better Twitter client for this device, something akin to Tweetbot, but famously, for some reason, the options simply aren?t there. I had been mucking about with TweetCaster, but it?s clunky with UI elements that use up far too much screen real estate for a device this small.

Kindle: Mostly a disappointment. Kindle for iOS is pretty strong, though not perfect, but takes full advantage of what iOS can allow. Kindle for Android feels bare-bones, something that would allow Amazon to say, well, technically we?re on Android (which is odd considering they have an Android app store all their own, which, I know, is really for other Kindle devices). The app seems to be confused by some books? formatting, while the iOS version seems to have no trouble with the same books, and the typeface options are nonexistent. A shame, but I also have a Kindle e-reader, so it?s not a huge deal.

Gmail: Very strong. The iOS version of the Gmail app is very nice looking, but the Android version is zippy and functional ? utilitarian, but in the best sense. I enjoy doing email on my Nexus thanks to this app. (Although both iOS and Android versions have this weird quirk where a forwarded email does not include the email address of the original sender. What the hell is up with that?)

Replacement Apps

Not all the iOS apps I rely on are available on Android, so here are some of the apps I?m trying out to fill in the gaps.

RSS: On iOS and Mac I adore Reeder. Its look and its functionality are best in class. But there?s no Reeder for Android. Luckily, there are some good options. Honorable mentions go to gReader (a spartan but strong Google Reader client) and Feedly (very stylish), but right now I?m using an app called Press. Like Reeder, it has a simple and classy aesthetic, and it doesn?t overwhelm with unnecessary bells and whistles. It?s just about as good as Reeder, so I?m pretty happy here. This is important, too, because I spend a lot of time reading in my RSS client.

Browser: Where iOS stocks Safari, the Nexus stocks Chrome. Its big plus is its synchronization of bookmarks across devices (like my Mac), but weirdly does not allow bookmarklets to work, which often do in Safari. This means in particular that for any functions that I prefer using bookmarklets for (like saving to Instapaper or Pinboard or sharing to Facebook or Twitter), I?m stuck with the stock Android sharing function, which overlays a huge menu of apps to which I could send content, and which takes a few seconds to pop up. It also allows for no customization, so, for example, I can?t tell it to always include an article?s title when posting a link to Twitter. You only get the URL, and have to add anything else manually.

Beyond that, though, Chrome on Android is solid.

Word Processing: I juggled between many different options when using iOS, such as Drafts for short bits of writing, Pages for longer material that might need some formatting, QuickOffice for things that required tight Word compatibility, etc. What I like about Android on the Nexus 7 is that I almost always turn to Google Drive (aka Google Docs) for all of it. It runs more smoothly than almost any app I?ve used on Android, and it has just about all the features you?d need in a mobile document editor (other than the ability to embed links, which baffles me ? come on, guys!). I don?t usually trade in presentations or spreadsheets outside of work, so I can?t speak to those, but for word processing, Google Drive is great. I?m using it right now!

Blogging: On iOS, I used a great app called Blogsy to post to whatever blog I was working on, and it was great. Not perfect, but the closest I?d found to a true WYSIWYG experience in a blog client. Not only is there no Blogsy for Android, but I?ve yet to find any blogging client worth a good god damn. There is the official WordPress client from which I can post, but it?s crappy. It only allows editing in plain text, and it has a weird way of forcing user perspective on whatever text field has the cursor. So for now, I do almost all my composing in Google Drive, but I can?t embed links there, so I have to either move it over to the WordPress app, or into the browser-based editor, which is clusterfuck on a touchscreen tablet. I need a better solution ? blogging on my iPhone (using the WordPress app) is easier, and it shouldn?t be.

To read this post, it?d be understandable if you though, ?Well it sounds like you liked the ipad better!? And you know, the iPad remains in many senses a superior product generally. But what I wanted was, again, something to read and browse on. For that, the Nexus 7 is still a better choice than the iPad for me (and that includes the iPad mini due to its atrocious screen). But there?s no doubt, there?s a huge gap of app quality between these two platforms.

Unless, of course, I?m missing something. If you know what I?m missing, please, do tell.

Citation Resources starts acid wash at Guatemala oil and gas well

Pdf Tuesday, January 15, 2013 by Bevis Yeo

(ASX: CTR) has started acid wash operations that will allow natural flow rates to be established from some of the intervals at its Atzam-4 well in Guatemala.

The first operation will be carried out on the Lower C18/C19 reservoir sections which did not recover any hydrocarbons or fluids following the first set of well bore perforations.

These sections produced significant oil shows, making it likely the perforations were blocked through excess cementing in this section caused by well bore washout whilst drilling.

An acid wash into these perforations will confirm if the excess cementing restricted any connection to the reservoir and an initial flow rate

This will be followed by an acid wash to break down the muds that were lost into the Upper C18 section, which occurred due to the heavy muds used while drilling and permeability of the sections.

Citation believes this will allow the interval to flow naturally.

Depending on the flow rates achieved from the C18/C19 sections post acid wash, if the perforated sections produce strong commercial flow rates the highly prospective C13 and C14 reservoir sections may not be tested in the Atzam-4 well.

In this scenario the Atzamp-5 well is likely to target the C13 and C14 reservoir sections.
