Overland Travel - Car Insurance Canada and USA -

It starts to feel as if getting insurance for Panda has become a nightmare that is haunting us. How can it be so difficult to get insurance for a vehicle? It has already been a huge hassle to find a company in Holland that would insure us for Europe, but that was nothing compared to the difficulties of getting insurance in Canada. Over the past couple of months I have contacted at least a dozen different companies and harassed a few fellow travelers to find out how they did it, but I am still at point zero.

As departure time is getting closer, this is starting to make us a little nervous. Even though I am still convinced it should be possible to obtain insurance once we are in Canada, we would be a lot more relaxed if it would be arranged in advance. We do not want to stand there in Halifax port, looking at the car but not being able to drive it anywhere..

By now I have contacted the following companies that are based in Canada:

Statefarm ? said they only insure Canadians
Allstate ? said they do not have temporary insurances
Kanetix ? do not insure cars older than 1997
Thum Insurance ? do not insure cars older than 19 years
Motorcycle Express (via the HUBB) ? only insure motorcycles
AIG Property ? need a US address + minimum a year

After having contacted those, I found some insurance companies that claim to insure overlanders for the whole world:

Tourinsure.de ? only when arriving in a US port
Karl Nowag ? only when arriving in a US port
Alessie Rotterdam ? only when arriving in a US port
Seabridge ? no cars older than 19 years

It seems that there is some tricky law that prevents international insurance companies to insure vehicles arriving in Canada. I do not really care if in Canada only Canadian companies are allowed to offer insurance, but we have not had any luck with the Canadian companies either.

I have now contacted the Canadian Insurance Bureau, hoping they can explain to us how to get this done.

But at the same time I want to ask you, fellow overlanders in the Americas, what did you do? Any advice on how to proceed? Should we try to reroute and start in the US instead of Canada? Should we contact the Canadian automobile club once in Canada? Try to get insurance in Halifax port?
Thank you so much for any help you can give us..
