AMITYVILLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) ? Back in November, the Heckman family of Long Island was without a home due to the high cost of caring for their young son with leukemia, and had lost a relative?s home because of Superstorm Sandy.

But as WCBS 880?s Sophia Hall reported, Saturday was a happy day for the Heckmans, as volunteers got together and rebuilt their home in Amityville.

?Thank you all from the bottom of our heart,? said Danielle Heckman as she was presented with the new home.

Tears began rolling down Danielle Heckman?s face as she stood with her husband and three children, including 6-year-old Steven, who is undergoing treatments for leukemia.

?I never expected anything like this,? she said.

Many people and organizations made it happen, including the National Association of the Remodeling Industry, DKMS Bone Marrow Registry, and Bob?s Furniture. The Heckmans? new home in Amityville was beautiful, with a brand new kitchen and living room.

And the builders were even able to change the house from a two-bedroom into a three-bedroom.

?I thought it was going to take us six months maybe even a year, and to have this and to have all these people here just helping us is incredible,? Danielle Heckman said.
