As Verizon considers possible investment in a wireless provider in Canada, the CEO at Rogers, the Toronto-based communications giant, has concerns that there might not be a level playing field for Canadian companies who might want to do the same.
"What we're absolutely against is a tilted or stacked playing field where you have a massive incumbent U.S. carrier that would be given favorable treatment, and frankly better treatment than Canadian incumbents," Rogers' Nadir Mohamed said on his company's quarterly earnings call this week, Canadian Press reported.
Mohamed worries that Verizon or other foreign businesses will be able to buy Canadian wireless companies on the cheap. Verizon recently confirmed that it's interested in getting into Canada's market, but wouldn't acknowledge rumors that it's pursuing Wind Mobile.
The concerns aren't without merit. Canada's government recently stopped comms behemoth Telus from buying Mobilicity, a smaller operator, in part because its spectrum license doesn't expire until next year. Rather than promote consolidation within the country, the government has said it wants conditions ripe for a fourth national carrier that will increase competition. It did away with restrictions that previously required foreign investors to pursue a wireless company with less than 10 percent market share.
Mohamed added that he's not sure a "four-player market can work in a country like Canada" due to its massive size.?

Hingham American Legion Baseball coach Vin Murray knows that it is not easy in the post season.
Post 120 is back in the playoffs with 32 points (16-6) and a No. 3 seed.
They started their best of three Zone 10 series against No. 5 Hawkeye Athletic Club (14-8, 28 pts.) this past Monday.
Hingham won that game 5-0, and is currently playing Game 2 of the series.
??The toughest part of the post season is advancing to the states from the Zone 10 playoffs,? Murray said. ?It is the toughest thing to get out of the zone. I am hoping that we can get out of the zone and get into the states. This is a group of players that have worked hard and deserve it.
??There are times where we were a high seed and were upset and one year we knocked off Brockton Post 35, which was the top seed and we were the eighth seed.?
The zone came down to the final day of the season to determine what the seedings would be.
??Kingston, Brockton, Plymouth and us are all good teams,? said Murray. ?You might have a great record and finish fourth and have to face Orleans which is an outstanding team.?
There is no better way to get ready for the post season than playing some of the teams that are battling for playoff spots.
?The Hingham American Legion Baseball team had the opportunity to face some of the teams that are competing in the Zone 10 playoffs. Post 120 spent the past week trying to determine where they would end up in the league?s playoffs.
They had to roll through some tough competition in Barnstable, which won the Massachusetts State Legion title for the second straight year as well as long time rival Brockton Post 35.
It was the second straight year that Hingham defeated Barsntable just after they won the state title.
Hingham rallied to defeat Barnstable in its meeting at Hingham. They came up with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a come from behind 5-4 win.
??We showed so much heart and character to come back and win that game,? said Murray.
Post 120 had started its season with a 4-3 win at Barnstable in a game that was called after five innings because of darkness. They have defeated Barsntable three straight times in the last two years.
Tommy Landry?s two-run single tied the game, 4-4 and Eddie Bowler capped off the rally with an RBI single to win the game.
??Eddie Bowler has come through for us in the clutch this year,? said Murray.
?Landry was winning pitcher for Hingham in relief of starter Sean Greene.
?Austin Irvin had a double and scored two runs for Hingham in the game.
?Post 120 had a lost a tough, 8-7 decision to Brockton in eight innings earlier this year. They were led by Robbie Madden?s complete game performance in defeating Post 35, 6-1.
?Madden worked out of a two-on situation in the sixth inning and a bases loaded situation in the seventh inning.
??There always seem to be people on base,? said Murray. ?But Robbie is such a warrior. He has the heart of a lion. Kevin Minassian has become an inspirational leader for us. We moved him into the leadoff spot and he has come through.?
?The Hingham veteran lefthanded pitcher also had two hits, stole four bases and scored two runs in the win.
Minassian added two hits for Hingham in the win over Brockton.
?Post 120 won its final two games over Wareham and Bridgewater by a forfeit.

Abortion-rights advocates have argued that abortion restrictions keep women down, ?undermining gender equality and?access to first-class healthcare benefits. ?
"Governor Perry and anti-choice politicians in the Texas Legislature have worked overtime to advance a cruel assault on women's health, dignity, and constitutional rights, saidJulie Rickelman?of the Center for Reproductive Rights.
Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, ?has vowed that Texas GOP lawmakers who approved the bill will pay a high cost, and that women will not forgive them for what they did.
"You will be able to win a tactical advantage," she said in a statement after Gov. Perry signed the bill resetricting abortions in Texas to the first 20 weeks of pregnancy. "But in the long run, all they have done is built a committed group of people across this state who are outraged about the treatment of women and the lengths to which this Legislature will go to take women's health care away."
Media coverage and newspaper editorials have repeated such claims. But in a July 20 column for the New York Times opinion pages, Ross Douthat challenges these assertions, and related arguments that present laws restricting abortion as the death knell for women's social and economic progress.
Douthat asks the following question.
What happens to a modern society when abortion is restricted? This question is at the heart of the debate over Texas?s new abortion law, which bans abortions after 20 weeks and issues health regulations that could thin the ranks of state abortion clinics, making even first-trimester abortions harder to obtain.
To prove that women will suffer far-reaching consequences
you would need to look at how abortion restrictions play out in a wealthy, liberal and egalitarian society. Here two examples are instructive: Europe in general and Ireland in particular.
It turns out that
many European countries already have versions of Texas?s late-term abortion ban on the books. France, Germany and Italy all ban abortions after the first trimester, and impose waiting periods as well.
Notably, these nations tend to have lower abortion rates than the United States, and none of them are exactly reactionary dystopias in the style of Margaret Atwood?s ?Handmaid?s Tale.? So the European experience suggests that at least some abortion restrictions are compatible with equality and female advancement."
Ireland, of course, offers a striking except to liberal first-trimester abortion laws, so Douthat takes a look at data measuring the social, health and economic status of Irish women.
?
Ireland?s maternal health outcomes have long looked much better than those of its neighbors, and even a recent report that produced a higher estimate for maternal mortality still placed the country well within the European norm.
Meanwhile, international rankings offer few indications that Ireland?s abortion laws are holding Irish women back. The country ranks first for gender parity in health care in a recent European Union index. It was in the middle of the pack in The Economist?s recent ?glass-ceiling index? for working women. It came in fifth out of 135 countries in the World Economic Forum?s ?Global Gender Gap? report. (The United States was 22nd.)
Now, if only ?the editorial board of the New York Times could spare a few moments to ponder the figures Douthat has provided ?here,?

'Red 2' and 'R.I.P.D.' seem aimed towards a similar audience. What will happen when they face off at the box office?

All of which makes this weekend's opening of both "Red?2" and "R.I.P.D." a little like sacking your own quarterback. Both films are action-thrillers. Both are about over-age law enforcers (in "R.I.P.D.," some are so old, they're dead). And both make a virtue of their, shall we say, mature stars.
Those stars include Bruce Willis (58), Anthony Hopkins (75), John Malkovich (59) and Helen Mirren (67) in "Red?2" and Jeff Bridges (63) and Kevin Bacon (55) in "R.I.P.D.," which, by the way, stands for "Rest in Peace Department."
It may not make a huge difference at the box office, but both films also feature the less-than-prolific Mary-Louise Parker, who is best known for her work in cable TV's "Weeds."
Add to all this the fact that Robert Schwentke, the director of Universal's "R.I.P.D.," had directed the original "Red" of 2010 from Summit Entertainment and for whatever reason (Schwentke didn't want to talk about it) lost the sequel to director Dean Parisot.
True, "R.I.P.D." pairs Bridges with 36-year-old former Sexiest Man Alive Ryan Reynolds, but as summer films go, the movies share notable audience overlap ? and on two fronts, says box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian.
"These films skew older due to the presence of Jeff Bridges in "R.I.P.D." and the older cast of "Red?2," he said. "And the bigger similarity is that they are both action crime comedies."
Assuming there's no ill will involved, a lot of coincidences are in play here, said distribution consultant Richard Abramowitz, who teaches film production at New York University and runs the film company Abramorama. "It seems like too big a mistake to be a mistake."
But the "Red?2"/''R.I.P.D." collision may simply be a symptom of the state of Hollywood. There have been very few weekends since May that haven't been dominated by a big-budget, major-studio release ? a so-called "tent-pole" picture. There was "Iron Man 3" on May 2, "The Great Gatsby" on May 10, "Star Trek Into Darkness" on May 15, "Fast & Furious 6" on May 24, "After Earth" on May 31 and so on.
Tellingly, when studios chose to expand a debut weekend with a weekday opening ? "Iron Man 3" was on a Thursday; "Star Trek" was on a Wednesday ? a rash of movies seemed to rush in to fill the Friday void. In fact, the Fridays following "IM3" and "STID" were among the more crowded of the summer, with 15 and 11 openings, respectively.

?Moody's Investors Service has upgraded several ratings of Sprint debt ratings following the closing of the merger agreement with SoftBank, and a separate merger agreement with Clearwire.
SoftBank, with an issuer rating of Ba1, acquired a 78% stake in Sprint, a transaction valued at $21.6 billion. Moody's believes that the merger with SoftBank will help Sprint to improve its operating performance in the highly competitive US wireless industry due to the infusion of $5 billion of new equity capital and SoftBank's track record of operational turnarounds of wireless companies in Japan (increasing market share and expanding margins). The merger with Clearwire, a company with a vast holding of spectrum, addresses Sprint's spectrum needs for at least the next several years.
Sprint's Ba3 Corporate Family Rating recognizes its large scale, its valuable spectrum assets, slowly improving operating profile, substantial liquidity, and the implicit support from Sprint's parent company and majority shareholder, SoftBank. Offsetting these strengths are high leverage, weak margins, and our projection for negative free cash flow through 2015. Near flawless execution across all aspects of the business, including the requirement to quickly redesign and modernize its entire network will be necessary before Sprint can hope to grow its market share in the brutally competitive US wireless industry.
Sprint and SoftBank will look to quickly maximize synergies after the closing of the deal. Reducing operating expenses will be crucial to successfully executing a financial turnaround. Combined, Sprint and SoftBank are expected to have the third largest position in terms of smartphones sold in the Japan and United States. With this scale, the company should be able to order larger numbers of smartphones at lower prices than they pay today. SoftBank has a proven track record and significant expertise in the wireless industry and will look to maximize network efficiency in order to reduce network operating expenses, reduce Information Technology-related costs, and improve churn as Network Vision is further deployed. Capital efficiency should also be realized due to the combined company's larger scale and Sprint's enhanced spectrum portfolio following the closing of the Clearwire deal. SoftBank believes that a 32-36% reduction in capital spending through synergies can eventually be achieved. SoftBank is experienced with managing heavy wireless traffic, building and deploying TDD-LTE technology and building out and maximizing core capacity at cell towers.
Wireless data demand is driving up spectrum needs for carriers as well as the perceived value of spectrum. Suffice to say, Sprint was facing a spectrum shortfall issue and the company's acquisition of Clearwire addresses spectrum needs for at least the next several years to support future growth. Clearwire's vast spectrum holdings in the 2.5 GHz band provides Sprint with tremendous depth and a platform for differentiation. With the expertise and guidance from SoftBank, we anticipate Sprint will leverage its 2.5 GHz spectrum capacity to achieve sustainable competitive speeds on its network.
In order for Sprint to reach its target goal of 200 million POPs covered by 4G LTE by year-end 2013 and complete Network Vision, capital spending will remain highly elevated through 2014. The company has publicly stated that it plans to spend a total of $16 billion in capital in 2013 and 2014. Moody's expects capital spending to decline to about $6 billion (unadjusted) annually after 2014. Sprint and Clearwire had a little over $8 billion of cash at the end of the 1Q 2013. Capital spending totaled almost $1.5 billion during the quarter. Sprint was scheduled to receive about $2 billion of new equity capital from SoftBank when their transaction closed and was expected to spend about $4 billion to purchase the shares of Clearwire that it didn't already own. High capital spending, modest revenue growth and low EBITDA margins supports Moody's projection for negative free cash flow through 2015. We project over $10 billion of cumulative negative free cash flow through 2015. Moody's expects Sprint will raise additional capital, either by going to market or receiving additional funding by SoftBank, to address its cash needs over the next few years.
Moody's believes that Sprint is currently at a significant competitive disadvantage to Verizon and AT&T since the two largest US wireless carriers have much larger LTE coverage today, an increasingly important factor behind subscriber provider decisions. Also, Verizon and AT&T have recently intensified their efforts to gain prepaid subscribers (a customer set the companies did not focus on previously) which makes up about one-third of Sprint's retail subscriber base. In addition, T-Mobile USA recently came out with some aggressive service pricing plans and a new program called JUMP, which allows customers to upgrade their phones up to twice a year. However, Sprint, along with T-Mobile USA, still have the benefit over Verizon and AT&T of offering unlimited data plans (albeit with weaker current LTE coverage compared to Verizon and AT&T). Unlimited data plans also run the risk of restraining future margin expansion at the expense of retaining customers as the demand for wireless data will continue to increase.
The ratings for the debt instruments reflect both the overall probability of default of Sprint, to which Moody's assigns a PDR of Ba3-PD, and the loss given default assessments of individual debt instruments.
Sprint's $3.0 billion unsecured credit facility is rated Baa3 (LGD2 - 14%). The three-notch lift from the Ba3 CFR reflects the structural seniority provided by the guarantees from the operating subsidiaries of Sprint. Sprint's Senior Unsecured Notes are rated B1 (LGD5 - 74%) and Sprint's Junior Guaranteed Unsecured Notes are rated Ba2 (LGD3 - 37%). The Ba2 rating assigned to Sprint's Junior Guaranteed Unsecured Notes reflects its seniority ahead of Sprint's Senior Unsecured Notes, and its subordinate ranking to the Senior Unsecured Guaranteed Bank Credit Facility.
The B1 (LGD5 - 74%) rating for Sprint's subsidiary, Sprint Capital, reflects the guarantees from the parent on a senior unsecured basis. The senior secured 2nd priority notes of Sprint's subsidiary, iPCS Inc., are rated B1 (LGD5 - 74%) and is secured solely with the underlying assets of iPCS. Moody's rates Clearwire's senior secured 1st lien notes and senior secured 2nd lien notes Baa3 (LGD1 -- 1%) and Baa3 (LGD1 -- 2%), respectively, three notches above the Ba3 CFR due to their priority claim and significant loss protection. The 1st lien notes are secured by substantially all of Clearwire's domestic assets, and are guaranteed, on a joint and several basis, by all domestic operating subsidiaries. Reflected in our LGD analysis is Moody's expectation that Sprint will likely redeem $2.947 billion of Clearwire's 1st lien notes due 2015 within the next 12 months and refinance the debt at Sprint's parent level. Moody's also ranks the company's $1.0 billion secured equipment credit facility ahead of the unsecured credit facility and pari passu to Clearwire's 1st lien notes.
The stable outlook reflects our belief that operational performance (churn, subscriber trends, market share) will improve and that operating synergies will be achieved enabling slow, but steady margin expansion. The stable outlook also incorporates an expectation that the Network Vision project will remain on schedule and will produce the expected benefits.
Sprint's ratings could be raised if its turnaround accelerates. Specifically, if leverage were likely to drop below 4.0x, and free cash flow were to turn positive rating pressure would ensue (note that all cited financial metrics are referenced on a Moody's adjusted basis).
Sprint's ratings could be lowered if the network upgrade falls behind schedule or doesn't yield the financial and operational benefits promised or if Sprint's competitive position deteriorates as evidenced by postpaid CDMA churn rising (outside of normal quarterly variances) or overall market share declines. Also, if the company allows its liquidity position to weaken significantly, negative rating pressure will ensue. Specifically, if leverage was likely to exceed 6.0x (Moody's adjusted) on a sustained basis, the ratings could be downgraded.

You Are Here: Home ? Africa/International ? Partnership key to Africa?s food security ? CEO of CGIAR
Page last updated at Friday, July 19, 2013 19:19 PM //Strong and dynamic partnership is key to addressing the challenges of poverty and food security in Africa, Dr. Frank Rijsberman, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), CGIAR Consortium, said on Friday.
Delivering a keynote address on ?The challenge of food security and the evolution of CGIAR?, Dr. Rijsberman highlighted the need for collaboration and coordination to ensure better alignment of research priorities, as well as to support uptake of new technologies.
He also highlighted the reformed CGIAR, which supports 16 cross-cutting research programmes, which are collaboration of the CGIAR Consortium?s 15 Research Centers, along with hundreds of other partners, all focused on achieving a food-secure future.
?The CGIAR Consortium is developing clear and standardized indicators for all of its research programmes, which will more clearly demonstrate the connection between our research and development outcomes.
But, he said, that would only be possible through strong partnerships with implementers as well as National Agriculture Research Systems (NARS), Sub-regional Organizations (SROs) and the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA).
According to the statement, in 2012, CGIAR invested 53 per cent of its funding in Africa, a clear commitment to supporting our African partners to reduce poverty and improve food security in sustainable ways.
The statement mentioned that through their partnership with CAADP, and their Memorandum of Understanding MOU with the AUC, we were building stronger alliances with our African partners.
It explained that the process was helping CGIAR Research Programmes to better align their research with the priorities of development partners including CAADP National Investment Plans.
?By ensuring the alignment of priorities and taking a collaborative approach to achieving these, we will help meet the real needs of smallholder farmers and their families, and the African people whose future depends on them,? it added.
According to the statement, the same message was echoed the previous day by Dr. Jimmy Smith, Director General of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), one of the member Centers of the CGIAR Consortium, at a press conference comprised of key dignitaries.
?The panels with Dr. Smith were Dr. Tiemoko Yo, Chairman, of the Board of FARA, Ambassador Professor Monty Jones, Executive Director of FARA, Hon Clement Kofi Humado, Ghana?s Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Kanayo F. Nwanze, President of IFAD, Ibrahim Assane Mayaki, CEO, NEPAD and Her Excellency Tumusiime Rhoda Peace, Commissioner, AUC-DREA,? it added.
According to the statement, Dr. Smith said the CGIAR Consortium was committed to Africa indicating that three of their centres were based in Africa and all of their 15 global research programmes were working in Africa.
The statement said that Africa Agriculture Science Week, which was hosted by the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) in collaboration with the Government of Ghana, would run until Saturday 20th July 2013 at the International Conference Centre, Accra, Ghana.
CGIAR is a global partnership that unites organizations engaged in research for a food secure future. CGIAR research is dedicated to reducing rural poverty, increasing food security, improving human health and nutrition, and ensuring more sustainable management of natural resources.
It is carried out by the 15 centres, who are members of the CGIAR Consortium in close collaboration with hundreds of partner organizations, including national and regional research institutes, civil society organizations, academia, and the private sector.

Improved fuel efficiency of vehicles and rising oil production in North America are two factors that could cause oil prices to drop 50% by the end of the year, according to one oil company executive.
Oftentimes a dramatic drop in oil prices ? in this case down to $50 a barrel ? portends a severe economic crisis; however, Gulf Oil CEO Joe Petrowski suggested the issue is matter of ample supply and lower demand.
?Demand is weak internationally,? he said. ?But domestically demand is even slightly weaker. Traveling (by car) is picking up, but we?re using much less oil. It is simply more fuel efficient cars and switching to alternate fuels.?
Petrowski also noted that North America is ?producing record amounts of oil and natural gas,? adding that OPEC suppliers are up as well. Additionally, demand from countries like China has ebbed, while the utilities sector has also cut its use of oil.
While the demand is going down and the price for oil could drop significantly, there are still plenty of other factors that contribute to the price of gasoline. Petrowski estimates that a shortage of pipelines and the need to transport fuel via rail and truck adds about 40 cents a gallon to gas prices.
?Remember: $50 oil does not translate into $2 gasoline,? he said.
It should be noted that gasoline prices began dropping around the July 4th holiday and were predicted to continue dropping; however, that prediction was false as prices began rising.
The national average for regular unleaded gasoline Wednesday was $3.65 a gallon, up from $3.50 last Wednesday and four cents above levels a month ago, according to AAA Fuel Gauge Report.
The AAA daily tracking of gas prices rose another penny Thursday to $3.66 for a gallon of self-serve regular, the 11th straight day of rising prices. Gas is up nearly 20 cents a gallon, or about 6%, during that period.
(Fuel prices slide in time for Independence Day. Click Here for more.)
There?s at least a 50% chance gas could top the $3.78 a gallon high for the year reached in February, according to Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst for GasBuddy.com.
(Click Here to read about Americans blaming oil company for high gas prices.)
A drop in the crude oil price has several implications, not the least of which is the potential for the destabilization of the governments who rely on oil income for social programs, such as Saudi Arabia. Any perceived lack of stability tends to inflate gasoline prices, Petrowski noted.

LIVINGSTON, Montana ? What kind of structure is round and keeps the bears out better than a teepee?
A grain silo.
Park County resident and Gallatin College green building instructor Jeff Moore came to this realization about eight years ago while dreaming up a plan for his affordable, energy-efficient, mountain home on the Bozeman Pass.
His first "home" on his 25 acres of forest was a tent, where he slept with a .44 magnum revolver, he said.
Next, he put up a tepee, which he liked, but that didn't last long, because bears attacked it and shredded the walls, Moore said.
Wanting to continue living in a round space, Moore said he considered a yurt, but ruled it out because of the odor.
"It smells like wet canvas ? it's like living in a canvas shoe," he said.
That's when grain silos popped into his mind, Moore said.
Not knowing where he could obtain one, he started asking around.
Fortunately, it wasn't long before "two blue-haired ladies" at the post office in Toston pointed him in the right direction, he said.
They gave him the phone number of a man in that area who had too many grain silos. Moore called the number and the man said he could buy one for $250, two for $150, or he could have three for free, but he had to do all the work to pick them up and take them away.
Moore decided to buy two, and now they are stacked on top of each other to form the core of his two-story, one bedroom, energy-efficient home.
Building his alternative mountain home, which he started five years ago, has been a long, piecemeal project, Moore said, and there is still a lot to do before it is finished.
Financing is not easily available for alternative building projects like his, Moore said, so he has had to buy all of his materials with cash, which motivated him to find most of his building supplies for free or at very low costs.
Nearly every part of the house ? the exterior walls, the roof, windows, doors, and the wood ? is re-purposed material, Moore said.
Many of the wooden rafters were salvaged from a parking garage that was torn down in Bozeman. Other wooden posts came from an old industrial building east of Livingston. Some gray wood came from a broken-down shed he found on his land.
The heavy-duty, German-engineered metal roof came from a damaged Yellowstone Club at Big Sky building that was being renovated. Super-insulated walls and windows came from construction companies that had mis-ordered.
This July 3, 2013 photo shows Park County resident Jeff Moore, who has built an energy-efficient, mountain home using recycled materials on the Bozeman pass, about six miles up Orea Creek Road. (AP Photo/Livingston Enterprise, Shawn Raecke)
Having worked in some form of construction for about 10 years, Moore said he had the right connections to acquire quality materials at low or no costs.
With all of his salvaging and re-purposing, the cost of building was about $40 per square foot, which is about one third of what it costs to build most standard homes, he said.
And this house is not a standard home ? it's much more efficient, he noted.
The windows are primarily south-facing, capturing heat from the sun, and the house is so well insulated it uses very little wood heat to stay warm.
Even with no heat, the house doesn't freeze in the winter, Moore said.
While Moore's mountain home is far from luxurious, it doesn't lack any amenities.
Water is gravity-fed from a spring. A flushing toilet drains into a septic system. A refrigerator runs on propane. Most electrical needs are met by a solar panel he bought second hand. An insulated watering trough doubles as a wood-fired hot tub in the winter and a cold pool in the summer. There is even wireless Internet.
He is pleased with what he has been able to accomplish with limited resources, but his process hasn't been the most efficient or convenient way to build a home, Moore said.
"If time is irrelevant, this is a very cost-effective way to go," he said of his building style.
But, if he had had financing, he would have bought the supplies he needed at cost and worked faster, he said.
Moore, who has a bachelor's degree in Spanish, said he had no idea when he started designing and building his own energy-efficient home that it would lead him to a new career in green building.
After years of doing seasonal construction and other adventurous jobs like raft guiding and teaching high school in Chile, and leading educational kayak tours in Alaska, Moore said his life took a turn three years ago when he transitioned from being a seasonal contractor to teaching classes year-round.
At first he taught home weatherization for the Montana State University Extension Department of Housing and Environmental Health.
He now teaches green design building classes for the Residential Building Performance Program at Gallatin College.
This is a recently-developed year-long program that teaches future contractors how to get started in the business of building high-efficiency homes, he said.
Moore said he enjoys teaching green building and sharing his experience in energy-efficient design with students, but one thing he doesn't teach, at least not professionally, is how to scavenge for materials the way he had to five years ago when he started with just a grain silo dream and not a lot of money.

Any SME looking for an infusion of dynamic fun and?energy should walk into the offices of biz-group. It?s hard?to ignore the vivacious d?cor and the attentive reception?staff. SME Advisor met with their equally vibrant founding?personalities, Hazel Jackson and Hazel Cowling, and?discovered that this energetic appeal is definitely not?limited to their office walls?
?
?Without passion, you don?t have energy, without energy you have nothing.? ? Donald Trump
?The intersection of doing something that you are good at and something that you are passionate about is bound to create a spark of energy and fun,? says Hazel Jackson. At biz-group, this is exactly the case.
The firm has created a niche for itself in the market with its training, business consultancy and personality development programmes. Yet it?s more than the sum of all the individual parts. It?s essentially a cross between a traditional management consultancy and a team building/ leadership firm ? a business that can leverage your growth on the path from startup, small to medium.
Having been in the business for around 20 years, the dynamic duo at biz-group have learnt that verve and vitality are important factors to incorporate within a business ? something that they have done with a good deal of success.
?The fun family feel is something that attracts people to your organisation and makes them want to stay with you,? says Hazel Cowling. While this approach is quite deeply applied within their team of employees ? apparent from their daily 9 am team huddle tradition ? it?s also something that has trickled down to their clients. ?Fortunately, we are now at a stage in the business where we can select clients that want this energy and vibe from us. We consistently get client feedback that reflects this,? explains Cowling.
Values
So, what?s the secret behind this approach? ?One of the main element was values. Our values are something that we hire on and fire on. They are something that align our goals in the same direction and create the family feel; giving the employees a clear framework in which to behave,? says Cowling. The company?s six values, listed across the office, are a constant reminder of what brings the firm together. ?We spend a significant amount of time in our business rewarding, creating experiences, storytelling and motivating based on these six values. We realise that you can train skills but not values,? adds Jackson.
The concept of ?corporate values? is often talked about and, for an SME owner, it is natural to wonder ? how important are values in the context of my business? Values form the core of an SME and are the DNA of the business. ?It doesn?t matter how small your business is, you have to set your values; each business should?have about five to six values. It is a very structured process.?
This process can be broken down into three key steps:
? Setting the values: Firms need to steer away from the stereotypical values such as ?integrity?, ?quality?, ?team work? and so on. ?We often see SMEs following the popular trends and aping the larger corporations. My advice to them is to keep their identity and be original ? while setting values or otherwise,? says Cowling. Values are ideally phrases and not individual words. Business owners need to uncover the commonly shared qualities across the organisation that essentially form the foundation of the business ? these evolve to become the values. ?Sustainable values are discovered not defined. They are already there, you just need to identify them,? adds Jackson.
? Validating the values: The values which are discovered should not be aspirational values ? they need to be realistic. ?It is important to validate them to see if they genuinely exist in the organisation and if they actually mean something to the employees,? says Jackson.
? Following the values: After the values are validated, the most crucial part is ensuring that they are implemented across all aspects of the business. ?We hire on them, fire on them, and also spend money on them,? says Jackson while Cowling adds, ?In fact, even as founders, we have to make sure that all our business decisions are aligned to our core values.?
Team management
While strong values have played a critical role in biz-group?s success, there is a lot more that has empowered the journey from a startup to a listing on the Dubai SME 100 ranking. What catalysed their growth? Jackson quickly replies, ?A lot of hard work and having fun while doing it alongside a team who was ready to do the same!? The duo attribute a substantial amount of their growth to a very talented team. ?We have built a team that allows us to step back as founders. We love to see our employees go out and perform ? sometimes better than us! Business owners and entrepreneurs have to invest in their team and give them the space to grow,? says Cowling. She relates this to the ?Rockefeller? phenomenon ? the oil billionaire who credited his success to the fact that he employed people smarter than him.
When asked to describe their company, Jackson says, ?At biz-group, we help you leverage your performance. Our three divisions are biz-strategy for business performance, biz-ability for people performance and biz-events for team performance. A combination of the three is what empowers an SME to accelerate performance and we apply this within our business as well.?
What is interesting, however, is that the founders apply these leadership, training and business development strategies first hand in their business. For instance, they have a dream book in the office where all employees record their dreams or wishes and, as a team, they try to help one another in fulfilling these. ?We are in the business to make an impact on people and it?s not just clients but our employees as well,? adds Jackson. With this example, there is an emphasis on the importance of nurturing employees and building a bond with them. ?It is vital to surround yourself with a team that wants to continually grow and push boundaries along with you,? says Cowling.
A strategic plan
Finally, one of the most powerful tools that has facilitated their business growth is their one page strategic plan ? an effective tool for SMEs. This business solution, in partnership with Verne Harnish, Founder of Gazelles Inc., is something they describe as the turning point of their business.
What is the one page strategic plan? ?This is a one page spread document with questions for an SME to answer which include their values, purpose, promise to their clients and what they want to achieve. This starts with a three year strategic plan which is further narrowed to a year, followed by a quarterly vision. The one page plan ties everything neatly together into one small document which is still immensely meaningful to the business. It also cascades down very well across the organisation,? explains Cowling.
Why is this important for an SME? ?This is essentially to discipline the undisciplined entrepreneur. It helps SMEs uncover their real potential and put things into perspective; they start thinking about key aspects like expansion plans or differentiating factors. Apart from offering this solution to SMEs, we actually apply this in our business too,? adds Jackson.
Another tool, supporting the strategic plan, is the ?SWOT? approach which the founders say they have now revised to ?SWT? ? strengths, weaknesses and trends. So how do they keep up with the market trends ? especially with the added responsibility of being a Dubai SME 100 ranked company? ?We are definitely nervous about the new rankings but in a positive way ? it reminds us to be competitive and non-complacent. It keeps us motivated and on the top of our game,? says Jackson.
Cowling adds, ?For instance, since being previously ranked on Dubai SME 100, we have constantly grown and evolved. We have introduced several new products, business simulations and business events. What?s more, our theme for this quarter is Innovation for growth!?

The price of oil moved up to $107 a barrel Tuesday as investors waited for the next U.S. report on crude and fuel inventories for confirmation that demand is increasing.
By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark crude for August delivery was up 69 cents at $107.01 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract gained 37 cents to settle at $106.32 on Monday.
Oil is up about 10 percent so far this month. It has been jolted higher by unexpectedly sharp drops in U.S. crude and gasoline inventories, which suggest stronger demand. The military ouster in early July of Egypt's president has also added a premium to crude, reflecting the risk of supply disruption from political instability in a country that controls the Suez Canal.
Those factors were tempered Monday by a second straight quarter of slowing economic growth in China, whose economy expanded 7.5 percent in the April-June quarter after 7.7 percent growth in the previous quarter.
While U.S. retail sales figures were also generally weaker than expected in June, spending was relatively strong in sectors important to oil markets.
"June's retail sales figures in the U.S. showed significant growth in car and gas station sales, which points to robust U.S. oil demand," said a report from Commerzbank in Frankfurt. "This has prompted financial investors to bet increasingly on climbing prices, thereby reinforcing the trend."
Investors will be monitoring fresh information on U.S. stockpiles of crude and refined products.
Data for the week ending July 12 is expected to show a draw of 2.5 million barrels in crude oil stocks and no change in gasoline stocks, according to a survey of analysts by Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill Cos.
The American Petroleum Institute will release its report on oil stocks later Tuesday, while the report from the Energy Department's Energy Information Administration - the market benchmark - will be out on Wednesday.
If the market forecast is confirmed, it could bolster the case of those traders and analysts who believe the oil price will rise further because U.S. energy demand is rising in step with faster hiring.
In London, Brent crude was up 35 cents to $109.44 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.
In other energy futures trading on Nymex:
- Wholesale gasoline rose 1.41 cent to $3.0444 a gallon.
- Heating oil gained 2.01 cents to $3.0479 a gallon.
- Natural gas fell 1.2 cents to $3.662 per 1,000 cubic feet.

With everything seemingly getting pricey, the latest blow to mwananchi is the Oil prices that are meant to go up for up to one month.
This is the first time in four months that motorist will have to dig deeper into their pockets for his near basic commodity.
In response to this the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) said the price increase was as a result of increase in import price as well as the weakening Shilling against Dollar value.
Fuel prices will be affected as follows in Nairobi, Super petrol will go up by KSHs. 3.70 per liter to retail at KSHs. 102.86, Petrol will go up by KSHs. 1.34 per liter to retail at 109.52 and kerosene price will go down by 2.03 to retail at KSHs.79.49
Anyway, whether we dig deeper for that extra shilling or not, road safety should be put in the fore front by all.
